Rules
1. Jarvis/Kaplan Cup
The inter-provincial tournament, which shall be known as the Jarvis Cup (A Section) for men
incorporating the XXV Trophy (B Section), Banana Bowl (C Section) and the D Section, the
Kaplan Cup (A Section) for women, incorporating the Ransome Trophy (B Section) hereafter
referred to as “the Tournament” shall be held each year during the second week of July. The
precise dates upon which the Tournament will be held will be determined by the National
Convention.
2. Venue
The Tournament will be hosted by an affiliated (Provincial) Association in the following rotation:
2008 Western Province, 2009 Gauteng, 2010 KwaZulu Natal, 2011 Border, 2012 Northerns,
2013 Eastern Province, 2014 Western Province, 2015 SACD, 2016 Easterns, 2017 Midlands,
2018 Gauteng, 2019 KwaZulu Natal, 2020 Border, 2121 Northerns, 2022 Eastern Province, 2023
Easterns carrying on in this order unless a particular Province would rather not hold the event then
a decision will be taken by the Executive as to where they fit back in or move everyone forward.
(NB Easterns, Midlands and SACD are relatively new provinces in the rotation and should be
included if they wish to host the Jarvis Kaplan event.)
3. Tournament
3.1 Sections :The Tournament shall be divided into sections as follows:

Exco ratifying the decision.

4. Squash SA

7.7 Team orders will be circulated to the provinces 7 days prior to the start of Jarvis/Kaplan

7.7.1 Any objections to this order must be sent with the relevant head-on-head results and
motivation to Squash SA in writing within 48 hours.

and to the organising province.
7.8. If any province is disputing/querying anything prior to Jarvis/Kaplan, then if there is a
selector on the panel which represents that Province they must recuse themselves.
7.9 Once a decision has been made by the Selection Panel/Committee and ratified by Exco,
this issue cannot be disputed and brought to the Dispute Committee at Jarvis/Kaplan Cups.
8 Composition of Sections
8.9 No province shall be entitled to field more than two teams in any one section unless the

11 Order of Play
11.1The team order will be set out as in Clause 7.

or ill to play a match unless, despite such injury or illness, he/she is able to and does play
to a standard that can be reasonably expected of him/her and is able to complete the
match.
11.7 If in the opinion of the Disputes Committee any player has breached 11.6 solely in order to
defeat 11.5 then the Disputes Committee shall, after taking all relevant steps into account,
decide if any penalty should be imposed in order to achieve a result that in their opinion
would be fair.
11.8A team may play short, forfeiting position number 5, if said team was unable to draw on

12 Captains’ Meeting
12.1During the afternoon of the day preceding the start of the Tournament, the Tournament
12.2Committee of the host province shall convene a meeting of the captains and managers of
all teams competing in the Tournament, which meeting shall be known as the “Captains’
Meeting”.
12.3Notice of precise time and venue of the Captains meeting shall be:
a. Sent to the Chairperson of the invited provinces at least one week prior to the
commencement of the Tournament.
b. Posted at the hotel at which participants will be staying during the Tournament week.
12.4 The following matters shall be attended to at the Captains’ Meeting:
a. The distribution of score sheets, result cards, balls, handbooks and other handouts
b. The team order as stipulated by Squash SA as per Rule 7.
c. The election of a Disputes Committee.
d. The giving of notice of the venue and precise times for the taking of team photographs.
e. The notification of a Tournament Referee at each of the several venues at which
matches are to be played. (Please consider if this is necessary or can there be a roving
Tournament Referee. If Court Stewards are used perhaps they can be the Tournament
Referee but they must be briefed.) Eg EP could not find another 4 Tournament
Referees.
f. Any other matter as may be necessary for the smooth and successful running of the
tournament.
12.5The Tournament Convenor, after consultation with Squash South Africa, may confirm the
final team order from the nominated list of players submitted to him/her by 16h00 on the
afternoon of the scheduled Captains’ Meeting.
13 Disputes Committee
13.1The Disputes Committee shall consist of 5 persons, who shall be elected from the
following:
a. Captains, members or managers present at the meeting;
b. A province may only have 1 representative on the Committee;
c. At least 1 member shall be a woman;
d. The Tournament Referee shall be the convenor.
13.2The Disputes Committee shall consider and decide upon any dispute or issue arising out of
or connected with the playing or which is referred to it for a decision.
13.3 If any dispute or issue referred to the Disputes Committee relates to a team from the same
province as a member of the Disputes Committee, then that member shall recuse
him/herself and the remaining member or members shall co-opt one or two persons (as the
case may be) who shall then act as members of the Disputes Committee for the purpose of
deciding that particular dispute or issue.
13.4The Disputes Committee shall not give a ruling or decision on any dispute or issue without
first giving the captains and the managers of the teams involved an opportunity to make
representations.
13.5 If it is necessary in order to arrive at a fair decision the Disputes Committee shall also hear
the views of any player, marker or referee who is directly involved in the dispute or issue.
13.6 If there is no specific rule or bylaw directly applicable to the dispute or issue which is
referred to it, the Disputes Committee shall base its decision on principles of fairness in
accordance with the spirit of the game and the Tournament.
13.7The responsibilities of the Tournament Director are:
a. To ensure that all facilities are in good order – both playing and change-rooms.
b. To ensure that all necessary equipment e.g. Balls, score sheets, pencils, result cards
are distributed and collected.
13.8The responsibilities of the Tournament Referee are:
a. To be convenor of the Disputes Committee.
b. To ensure that all matches start on time and to use his/her discretion in imposing the
necessary penalty award.
c. To adjudicate any disputes regarding marking and refereeing.
d. To adjudicate any violations of rule 17 of the WSF Rules.
e. To report to Squash SA any on/off court disciplinary matters.
14 Scoring System
14.1 Jarvis Cup/Kaplan Cup – round robin.
For the Round Robin system 14.2 ,14.3, 14.4, 14.5, apply
14.2The winner of each individual game shall be awarded one point (called a game point) and
the team winning the most matches shall be deemed to be the winner of the tie and shall
be awarded five bonus points i.e. a team winning with score 3/2, 3/2, 1/3, 1/3, 3/1 will earn
points.

15 Jarvis Cup/Kaplan Awards Dinner
15.1The Tournament Committee shall organise an Awards Dinner to be held on the
last day of the Tournament.
15.2 At the Awards Dinner
a The relevant trophies shall be presented to the captains of each of the winning teams
in each section.
b A team consisting of 5 players – the best players in positions 1 to 5 – from the Jarvis
Cup i.e. A section and from the Kaplan Cup i.e. A section, other than the winning
teams, shall be announced. (These teams shall be selected by a selection
committee of 3, who shall be those National selectors present at the Tournament.
Should the National selectors not be present, then those present shall co-opt one or
two members as the case may be, to constitute a committee of three. If no National
selectors are present at the Tournament then the Disputes Committee shall nominate
three persons to act as a selection committee.
c The Tournament shall be entitled to present and award to:
i. The most promising young female player (the Lisa O’Grady Trophy);
ii. The most promising young male player (the Greg Hammond Award);
iii. The most improved male player (the Lance Sibbald Trophy);
iv. The most improved female player (the Glenda Erasmus trophy);
v. A recipient of the Seccie de Villiers Award;
vi. A recipient of the Clifton-Parks Award;
vii. A recipient of the Gary Thomson Award;
viii. The most organised province;
ix. Former President’s Award.
16 Eligibility
16.1Only one non-South African player per province will be permitted for the Jarvis Cup and
only one non-South African player per province for the Kaplan Cup (See Note 1).
16.2A player may not represent more than one provincial association in one season. (This
applies to Juniors, Seniors and Masters).
16.2.1 No residential qualifications is necessary, but players must opt by 1st
for a province. This must be submitted in writing to Squash SA and signed by the

16.2.2 Once a player has played for a province they need to complete a transfer form as in
16.2.1 if they wish to represent another province. In this way both provinces are aware
of movement of players in and out of their respective provinces.
16.2.2 SA Citizens and permanent residents who have:

WISPA

Who are engaged in coaching or league activities must demonstrate proof of
i. PSA or WISPA membership;
ii. Active participation in league/tournament/coaching activities such as to satisfy
16.2.3 Players (SA Citizens or non-South African players) playing overseas wanting to play
for a different province other than that for which they played previously, must apply
16.2.4 Each province shall impose its own criteria as regards eligibility which shall be
submitted to Squash South Africa annually before the 1 March in respect of league
16.2.5 All players selected for the Tournament must have written and passed the Level 2
16.2.6 All players selected must also satisfy any other criteria as laid down by Squash SA.
16.2.7 Should a province wish to select a player under the age of 18, they must apply in
writing to Squash South Africa motivating the selection and providing the name of the

A player is considered to be a South African player if he/she is the holder of a South African passport
and has a South African identity document or has permanent residency in South Africa and is eligible to
represent South Africa in international competition. (Proof of permanent residence citizenship may be
requested).
