Women’s Cricket Coming to Warrington

We are delighted to announce that the former Tytherington Cricket team will integrate into Warrington Cricket Club in 2009 which will enter the ECB Premiership (North)in next years cricket season……

As part of our overall plans to increase the amount of cricket played at Warrington we are delighted that for the 2009 cricket season we will enter a team into the Women’s ECB Premiership (North) Division as part one of our club providing cricket for females in the area. There are currently two Premier Divisions (north & south) with six sides competing in each playing five home and away games. The top two teams from each Division will play off in the grand final in September 09.

The side which will be coached and managed by Stephen Douglas and Andy Paton with the captaincy to be announced early next year will become a fully integrated part of the club. Coach Stephen Douglas explained ‘We are delighted with the direction that the club is taking to fully support women’s cricket in Cheshire and it’s a really exciting time especially with the junior girls development plans to follow. Warrington will provide some amazing facilities for the 2009 season. With the benefit of two pitches, a brand new net facility to follow, high quality changing facilities and a superb playing surface it has allowed the club to capture the signings of some of the best female cricketers in Cheshire. Already these include for 2009 England Academy players Lauren Griffiths and Dawn Prestige as well as up and coming stars Lorna Thomas and Hannah Gradwell. The club is also pleased to have seconded the services of Cheshire Women’s scorer & Press Officer Martin Saxon who will work closely to further develop women’s cricket in the region.

Junior Development 2009 and Onwards

The formation of our senior team is the key to our development in women’s cricket in 2008/9 and is a massive step forward for our club. However it is the subsequent plans for 09/10 that provide the greatest opportunities for females in the area.

Part two of the long term development of cricket for females at Warrington Cricket Club is to form an U13 Junior girls team which will enter the Cheshire Women’s Junior T20 Competition in 2009/10. Club Chairman Gary Musker explained further, ’Its clear from our research that we have to take a step back in the long term development of women cricketers. The current 15 – 20 year old girls are now ‘lost’ to cricket so we have to make sure that we plan accordingly so that in the future we do not miss out on these age groups. Therefore we see it as key to introduce U13 girls (for example girls from the ages of 9-13) into a female only arena where they can develop their skills accordingly. The introduction of this competition by the CWCL next season is a terrific way forward and we will do all that we can support this development. The bottom line is that these U13 girls are the future stars of Warrington Women’s Cricket Club and even possibly at International level’.

We will be working hard with the local schools and Community Coaches to develop a group of 15-20 girls who will be able to become junior members of our club, utilise all our facilities and with good fortune and planning will integrate into our senior side in the years to come.

Therefore –

  • We will be holding regular ‘taster’ sessions in schools to initially identify the talent which will be then followed by a series a training sessions ready for the 2009 – 10 seasons.
  • With approximately 12-14 weeks of training sessions and matches every other week it is certainly going to be a busy time for girls in the Warrington area. To support our activities we have a UKCCL2 & 3 coaches and the backing of the local Community Coaches from Cheshire Development.

To support our activities we will also be working with our local council / authority to raise local grants to help provide equipment / playing kit for Junior girls to help them full fill their cricketing ambitions.
